Why Screens Are Designed to Be Addictive (And Why That's Not Your Fault as a Parent)
Some Days I Wonder If We're Living Through the Tobacco Story Again
And at this point, you might be wondering what I'm talking about or what crazy comparison I'm about to make. But, let's be honest for a second.
If you've ever watched your child melt down when a screen gets taken away, full-body, can't-hear-you-right-now, this-is-the-worst-day-of-my-life meltdown, some part of you probably wondered: is this normal?
Here's the guilt-free answer: it's not a parenting failure. It's not that your kid is "too sensitive" or that you started screens too early or too late. What you're seeing is a designed response: screens are designed to be addictive. And once you know the history behind that design, the whole thing makes a lot more sense, and gets a lot less personal.
A Cartoon Camel, and a Lesson We Should Have Remembered
In 1988, R.J. Reynolds introduced a cartoon camel to sell Camel cigarettes. He shot pool in a tuxedo. He rode motorcycles in a leather jacket. He was cool, smooth, easy to love, and it turned out, easy for a four-year-old to recognize. And while I was a little older than 4 in 1988, I vivdly remember this camel.
By 1991, two studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found something the company never wanted printed. One showed that 91.3% of six-year-olds could correctly match the cartoon camel with a picture of a cigarette, nearly matching the number of kids who could pair Mickey Mouse with the Disney Channel (Fischer et al., JAMA, 1991). The other concluded that the cartoon ads were far more effective at marketing cigarettes to children than to adults, and that Camel's share of the illegal youth cigarette market jumped from under 1% to nearly 33% during the campaign (DiFranza et al., JAMA, 1991).
The company always said the ads were meant for adults. The research said otherwise. It took nine years, until 1997, for the campaign to end, after the American Medical Association, the American Cancer Society, the Surgeon General, and 27 state attorneys general all pushed the FTC to act (Stanford Research into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising).
We tend to tell this story like it's finished. A relic. A "can you believe they used to do that" moment.
But the mechanism didn't disappear. It just changed shape.
The Same Playbook Lives in Your Pocket Now
Aza Raskin, the engineer who invented infinite scroll, the endless feed with no bottom and no natural stopping point, has said publicly that behind every screen are teams of engineers working to make the product maximally addicting, and that he's since compared what happened to his invention to sprinkling behavioral cocaine over an interface (Malorie's Adventures, 2026). Loren Brichter, who built pull-to-refresh for Twitter, has said plainly that the feature, and the platform it powers, is addictive (The Guardian, via Malorie's Adventures, 2026).

None of this is an accident of technology. It's the result of specific, intentional design choices, aimed at a brain that isn't fully equipped to resist them yet:
Variable rewards. Every scroll or refresh might deliver something boring or something thrilling. That unpredictability is the same mechanism, known as intermittent variable reinforcement, that makes slot machines so hard to walk away from (Euronews, 2026; NYU psychologist Adam Alter, BBC Science Focus).
No stopping cues. A book has a back cover. A show has a credits sequence. A feed has neither, on purpose, because a natural pause is a natural exit (Alter, BBC Science Focus).
Notifications timed to pull you back. Not just "you have a message," but nudges engineered to spark curiosity and a flicker of fear of missing out right as attention starts to drift (Logoff Media, 2025).
In 2025, juries in Los Angeles and Santa Fe found Meta and Google negligent for designing apps in ways that harmed kids' mental health, and in early 2026 a Stanford psychiatrist testified in a related California trial that platforms deploy features specifically engineered to "drugify" attention, especially for young users (Fox Business, 2026). Sound familiar? It's the same basic story: something irresistible to a developing mind, built by adults who understood exactly what they were doing, defended for years as harmless fun.
So Where Does That Leave Us as Parents?
Nowhere near guilty. That's the whole point.
You are not competing with your child's willpower. You are competing with teams of adults whose full-time job is capturing attention. Losing that fight sometimes isn't a character flaw in you or your kid, it's the design working exactly as intended.
That doesn't mean you're powerless because we do have an arsenal of tools we can utilize to help minimize screen usage. A few small, doable places to start:
Set clear, predictable boundaries before the moment gets hard. Decide when screens are and aren't an option (after homework, not before school, never at the table) and say it out loud, ahead of time, so it isn't a negotiation in the heat of the moment.
Let boredom sit for a minute before you solve it. Boredom is the doorway to the kind of open-ended play and problem-solving screens shortcut around. You don't have to fix it immediately, and neither does your child.
Have a real alternative ready, not just a rule. A "no" without a "here's what instead" is a much harder sell to a brain wired for stimulation. Keep something screen-free within arm's reach before the whining starts.
Narrate your own screen habits out loud. Kids notice what we reach for when we're bored, stressed, or waiting in line. Naming it ("I'm going to put my phone down for a bit") teaches the boundary as much as enforcing theirs does. And so does naming it in the opposite light ("I'm going to use my phone to do 15 minutes of work right now.")
Give transitions a warning, not a surprise. "Five more minutes" said once at the start of a session works far better than an abrupt shutoff, especially with something engineered to make stopping feel bad.
That's the whole idea behind what we build at Beyond the Screen Families. Not a screen-free household. Not a lecture about limits. Just something else genuinely good, ready in the moment your child would otherwise reach for a device: curiosity, a little mess, a project they can sink their hands into, a few minutes of your actual attention.
No planning. No prep. No pressure. Just an alternative ready before "I'm bored" even shows up.
We couldn't out-willpower Joe Camel, either. We changed what was available, changed what a whole generation of kids grew up around, and eventually changed the story.
That's the goal here too. One box, one pack, one screen-free afternoon at a time.
